Our weekly blog series highlighting the women that inspire us
Sarah Ribner & Jess Edelstein
New York, NY & Philadelphia, PA
RIGHT NOW: WHERE ARE YOU, WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON, AND WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE ITEM YOU’RE WEARING?
SR: This weekend I’m just north of Salt Lake City at a community of entrepreneurs and thought leaders who meet a few times per year to mingle and inspire each other. I’m taking a break to work on responding to retailers and some operational tasks. I’m wearing my favorite IMBY high-waisted jeans and a massive knit color-block sweater to brave the cold!
JE: Sitting on the couch in my new house (which my fiance and I just moved into this week!) working on getting to inbox zero so I can enjoy the rest of the weekend. Favorite item is a custom necklace that says “PW” in script metal letters. Sarah got it for me for my birthday and I never take it off.
SUM UP YOUR STYLE IN ONE SENTENCE.
SR: A mix of on-trend and classic pieces, that take me from the office to outings with friends and casual weekend brunches.
JE: I prefer comfort over style so if I ever happen to look stylish it was not on purpose.
WHAT INSPIRES YOU ABOUT THE WORK YOU DO?
SR: I’m inspired by PiperWai’s overall impact. We sell a product that solves a very personal issue without relying on synthetic chemicals or ingredients that could be potentially harmful to our bodies. PiperWai’s impact transcends the physical product we sell, in that our company promotes core values such as healthy living and philanthropy through our online community and partnerships.
JE: Being told PiperWai improves so many people’s daily lives is the most incredible feeling.
HOW DO YOU LIVE ‘MINDFULLY?’
SR: I focus on activities that force me to relax and to be present, including yoga, meditation, journaling and handcrafting. I either handcraft fashion accessories or skincare, depending on my mood. It’s a great creative outlet and I end up with a functional item for everyday use!
JE: It’s so easy to get caught up in a moment and forget to enjoy it. I believe acknowledging how difficult it is to be mindful is step one to achieving it…
WHAT’S THE FIRST THING YOU DO WHEN YOU WAKE UP?
SR: I being my day with a 15-minute yoga session and 10 minutes of meditation. I’m also a huge breakfast fan so I carve out time to make a large nutritious breakfast (usually avocado toast, fried eggs, fruit, and granola, or gluten free pancakes), paired with my favorite liver detox drink (hot water, lemon juice, turmeric, and ginger). If I’m feeling sluggish I’ll replace the live detox with a cup of caffeinated tea.
JE: Snuggle with Velma, my rescue mutt/teddy bear
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE YOU TO GET READY IN THE MORNING?
SR: Between 15 and 30 minutes, depending on where I have to be that morning.
JE: It probably only takes me 15 minutes total to “get ready”, but I hate feeling rushed, so I always give myself at least two hours between waking up and getting out the door. I like to enjoy breakfast and feel like I have everything I need for the day before I leave the house.
WHAT’S YOUR GO-TO WORKOUT?
SR: I rely on yoga to boost my concentration, and for stress relief. It also helps me manage back pain. It’s also one of the few low-maintenance workouts with such a large impact – all you need is flexible clothing, a towel or mat and yourself!
JE: I always thought I hated group cardio until I tried SoulCycle. There’s one opening right near my office soon in Philly and I’m SO excited to go more often.
WHAT DO YOU DO TO KEEP YOUR LIFE (AND CLOSET!) A LEAN, MEAN, CLUTTER-FREE MACHINE?
JE: I’m a member of my local Buy Nothing Group on Facebook. If an item hasn’t been useful to me in more than 6 months, it’s probably better off taking up space in a neighbor’s closet instead of mine.
YOU’RE A BUSY BABE. HOW DO YOU BALANCE WORK, HEALTH, AND YOUR RELATIONSHIPS?
SR: It took me a lot of time to figure this one out! Starting the day earlier, around 6am, helps me find time for everything I want to accomplish throughout the day.
JE: Fortunately, work brings me a lot of joy because it rarely ever feels like work. My fiance, Marc, owns a web design agency and feels the same way. When you have a partner who gets that entrepreneur lifestyle, balance happens naturally.
WHAT PODCASTS OR BLOGS DO YOU KEEP UP WITH?
SR: I’ve found most of my favorite style bloggers on Instagram, including Song of Style and Kat Tanita. My absolute favorite blog Evelinas Ekologiska, a Swedish blogger. Her handmade organic skincare, and gluten free/vegan recipes are all so unique!
JE: I’m a podcast junkie. Anything on Gimlet Media or NPR. And I listen to Ask Me Another *religiously* #nerd
WHO DO YOU ADMIRE?
JE: My mom. She’s a superhero. I don’t know how she did it all.
SR: I have to agree with Jess on this one, I admire my mom. She has razar sharp instincts and serious work ethic, and somehow she balances everything!
FAVORITE SPOTS FOR A HEALTHY MEAL?
SR: I LOVE Hu Kitchen, the fast-casual paleo restaurant on 14th Street and 5th Avenue. I don’t follow a strict paleo diet, but it’s comforting to know that any meal I get there will be gluten free, organic and nutrient dense.
JE: Snap Kitchen is life-changing. It’s growing in Philly and seriously needs to be everywhere.
WHITE HOT LIGHTENING ROUND– GO!
HEELS OR FLATS? Both: Flats (JE: I love my Tieks!)
BUSINESS OR CASUAL? Both: Casual
EARLY MORNINGS OR LATE NIGHTS? Both: Early mornings (JE: Love them!)
NEW YORK OR LA? Both: New York
COFFEE, TEA, OR MATCHA? SR: Matcha, JE: Double Espresso
COMPLETE THIS SENTENCE: LIVING INTENTIONALLY MEANS…
SR: stopping to appreciate what you have and what you’ve accomplished.
JE: enjoying each and every moment.
