RIGHT NOW: WHERE ARE YOU, WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON, AND WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE ITEM YOU’RE WEARING?
I’ve been traveling lots, so everything is in flux, which is how I like it! I’m working on watercolor paintings for my first pop-up sale, designing some items for an exciting top-secret project for Casa Joshua Tree, and prepping for my next workshop at CJT- Indigo on May 6th. I like to keep my wardrobe simple- I live in a denim button-down and jeans (I can never get enough denim).
SUM UP YOUR STYLE IN ONE SENTENCE.
Simple essentials, accented with artistic accessories.
WHAT INSPIRES YOU ABOUT THE WORK YOU DO?
I have always wanted to be an artist- it’s such a part of who I am, I can’t imagine a life not being one. I love working on collaborative projects, and I find it inspiring when I put my head together with other awesome folks and we make a project together that is even better than we could have imagined or accomplished on our own! It’s all about connection. My designs and paintings are about connecting with the world around me on a deeper level.
HOW DO YOU LIVE ‘MINDFULLY?’
I’ve paired down my belongings significantly over the last couple of years. The things I own and the clothes I wear have to be stuff I really love. When contemplating bringing something new into the mix, I have to absolutely love it. Otherwise, nope. I’ll often give myself a waiting period– if I really want something and keep thinking about it days after, then I’ll buy it. In regards to my health– I’m trying to make better choices about food this year. I started paying attention to ingredients and sources, and wow- it’s pretty eye opening.
WHAT’S THE FIRST THING YOU DO WHEN YOU WAKE UP?
Snuggle my cat, Hewson, and then straight to the kitchen to make coffee. If I could train the cat to make coffee, that would be a dream come true.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE YOU TO GET READY IN THE MORNING?
I work from home most days so my level of “readiness” for the outside world can vary. But on average, 15-20 minutes max? Sometimes 5 minutes. I’m a minimalist with fine, thin hair and sensitive skin—no complex hair or makeup regimes for me!
WHAT’S YOUR GO-TO WORKOUT?
I have learned that I will only work out in class settings, and if left to my own devices I will never go to the gym. I try to catch a Zumba, Spin, or Yoga a few times a week. I love to hike in Joshua Tree National Park and surrounding areas too, which is my most favorite way to workout.
WHAT DO YOU DO TO KEEP YOUR LIFE (AND CLOSET!) A LEAN, MEAN, CLUTTER-FREE MACHINE?
I live by the one-thing-in, one-thing-out rule for my closet. For my office and business- that’s still a work in progress but I’m moving towards digitizing receipts and papers and keeping a regular routine for organizing. “trying” is the operative word– I tend to be a paper hoarder. Working on it….
YOU’RE A BUSY BABE. HOW DO YOU BALANCE WORK, HEALTH, AND YOUR RELATIONSHIPS?
Balancing can feel more like juggling sometimes. A good day means I did a little meditation, had some tech-free time, got a little exercise, and did some drawing- that’s when I feel like my best self.
WHAT PODCASTS OR BLOGS DO YOU KEEP UP WITH?
I love design blogs- designsponge.com, remodelista.com, thejungalow.com, and designlovefest.com are regulars for me. Podcasts– I go through phases where I binge and then don’t listen for months. Reply All, Death Sex & Money, Sooo Many White Guys, She Explores are favorites.
WHO DO YOU ADMIRE?
WHERE TO START OMG! So many. From an artistic standpoint- I am slowly becoming more and more obsessed with Georgia O’Keeffe and learning about her life. The more I learn, the more I love her. I am SO excited to be taking a pilgrimage to New Mexico in may to see where she lived and painted.
On a personal level, my BFF Whitney Leigh Morris. She is balancing a new baby, absolutely SLAYING with her work, and making it look easy (even though I know for a fact, it is very challenging and she works extremely hard). We’ve been friends since high school, and I still have endless admiration for her and major hair jealousy dating back to ’95. She is the kindest, most loyal and loving friend– I want to be like her when I grow up!
FAVORITE SPOTS FOR A HEALTHY MEAL?
Healthy meal spots are limited out here in the high desert- but luckily there’s a little juice bar in town called Natural Sisters where I can always stop in for an iced coffee and a veggie wrap.
