RIGHT NOW: WHERE ARE YOU, WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON, AND WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE ITEM YOU’RE WEARING?
Oh, this is a great question. I’m sitting at Bardonna on Montana Ave, my favorite coffee shop to bang out work. I’m working on conceptualizing the content for our fourth issue, planning a launch party for our third, annnnnd doing the most glamorous part of my job– taxes and bookkeeping.
I’m wearing two new(ish) things I adore: my Coralie Reiter earrings and my black Eileen Fisher duster.
SUM UP YOUR STYLE IN ONE SENTENCE.
I almost always wear flowy, black pieces that make me look relatively put together with minimal effort.
WHAT INSPIRES YOU ABOUT THE WORK YOU DO?
Seeing the light in women’s eyes when they come together during our Work Sesh events every Tuesday. For many of us, it’s our favorite time of the week.
HOW DO YOU LIVE ‘MINDFULLY?’
Honestly, I worry most of the time I don’t. I have been trying lately to get back in my body. I get too heady sometimes. So I’ve begun doing this thing where I stand up, make sure both feet are flat on the ground, and try to think about where my weight is positioned in my feet– and try to feel each of my toes individually. It’s weird. But it’s helping me.
WHAT’S THE FIRST THING YOU DO WHEN YOU WAKE UP?
Kiss my boyfriend’s shoulder as I roll out of bed and try not to squash my kitten who is always sleeping at my feet.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE YOU TO GET READY IN THE MORNING?
20 minutes? I hate showering, so I try to do it as fast as possible.
WHAT’S YOUR GO-TO WORKOUT?
Yoga or a long walk.
WHAT DO YOU DO TO KEEP YOUR LIFE (AND CLOSET!) A LEAN, MEAN, CLUTTER-FREE MACHINE?
We have an area in the living room where we constantly put objects that we want to donate to Goodwill. Friends have learned that they are welcome to anything in the pile– and after about a month of storing things up we make a Goodwill run.
Also, whenever I buy something new I usually throw out my old version of the same object. I hate having things, so I try to live with as few objects as possible.
YOU’RE A BUSY BABE. HOW DO YOU BALANCE WORK, HEALTH, AND YOUR RELATIONSHIPS?
I think of my schedule more of a waxing and waning of different aspects than a constant balance. There are days when I get very little sleep but get a lot of good work done. There are days when I take the whole afternoon off to get a massage.
For me it always feels like one single day isn’t long enough to fit everything in. But a week is long enough to find space for everything.
WHAT PODCASTS OR BLOGS DO YOU KEEP UP WITH?
Right now I’m enjoying The Daily by NYTimes, Still Processing (also NYTimes), and How I Built This by NPR. To be honest, I don’t read too many blogs regularly with the exception of Design*Sponge and Oh Joy! Create & Cultivate has been publishing some really interesting pieces lately too.
WHO DO YOU ADMIRE?
So many people. Right now I’m particularly in awe of Jenny Boylan, transgender activist, phenomenal novelist (and memoirist), and my college advisor.
